Description

Camden CM-830 SPDT Momentary Lock/Strike

The Camden CM-830 is an SPDT momentary rocker switch rated for 20 amps at 12/24V DC, designed to control door strikes and electronic locks in access control installations. This wall-mounted plastic-case unit delivers direct operator activation of door release mechanisms — a straightforward, unpowered switching solution for deployments where networked relay modules or panel-based control are unnecessary or unavailable. The switch requires no network integration, software configuration, or external control panel; it simply closes a momentary contact to trigger a strike release.

Key Features

  • SPDT Momentary Contact: Single-pole double-throw, momentary action. Each press activates the connected strike or lock; release returns to rest state. No maintained contact or latching.
  • 20A Switching Capacity: Rated for 20 amps at 12/24V DC. Suitable for direct control of standard electric strikes, electromagnetic locks (maglock), or solenoid releases without intermediate relay modules.
  • Dual Voltage (12/24V DC): Works with both 12V and 24V DC power supplies. Verify your strike/lock power rail before wiring to avoid mismatch.
  • Compact Wall Mount: Dimensions 2.50 × 2.25 × 1.38 inches (per spec); compact footprint fits under counters, at guard stations, or desk-mounted access points.
  • 100,000 Mechanical Cycle Rating: Rated for 100,000 activation cycles — suitable for high-traffic reception areas, emergency exits, or frequently-used release points.
  • Plastic Enclosure (Non-NEMA): Matte black plastic case; weatherproof but not submersible or rated for direct outdoor weather exposure. Not suitable for wet or harsh industrial environments without additional weathering protection.
  • 3-Year Warranty: Manufacturer warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship over three years from purchase.
  • Common/NC/NO Terminal Layout: Standard three-terminal SPDT configuration. Wire Common to strike positive, NC or NO to strike negative/ground depending on fail-safe vs. fail-secure mode required.

The CM-830 excels in straightforward access control scenarios where momentary switching is the only requirement. Reception desks, guard stations, and emergency exit points benefit from its simplicity — no IP network latency, no software licensing, and no panel dependency. Pair it with any 12 or 24V DC-rated strike, maglock power module, or solenoid release that accepts momentary contact activation. The switch does not require integration with access control system software; it functions as a hardwired electrical component.

Verify strike compatibility before installation. The CM-830 is designed for momentary activation only — if your strike requires maintained contact (held energized while door is open) or if you need timed release control, the CM-820 (maintained contact) or CM-840 (timed solenoid release) variant may be required instead. Consult your strike or lock datasheet for contact type requirements.

Installation is straightforward. Mount the unit horizontally or vertically on any flat surface using the provided screw holes (2-inch on-center spacing). Wire the Common, Normally Closed, and Normally Open terminals to your strike power supply using standard 18–16 gauge solid or stranded copper wire. No special enclosure or protective panel is included; the plastic case offers weather resistance but lacks NEMA rating. If outdoor exposure or washdown environments are in scope, consider the CM-810 or CM-820 aluminum NEMA-rated variants instead. The 100,000 mechanical cycle rating supports high-traffic deployments without premature switch wear.

The CM-830 is a utility component — not a smart lock, not a networked relay, not an integration point. For integrators, it fills the gap between fully-automated access control systems and manual mechanical door operation. It requires no power supply beyond the strike's own 12 or 24V rail, reducing bill-of-materials cost and eliminating one potential failure point. Wire it once, and it operates without firmware updates, network outages, or cloud dependencies.

Perspective based on aggregated IP Security Depot and affiliated engineering team experience.

We've installed hundreds of push-to-release switches across access control deployments, and the CM-830 remains one of the most reliable and cost-effective momentary activation solutions for straightforward door strike applications. The key operational advantage is simplicity — there's no network layer to troubleshoot, no relay module to program, and no integration overhead. Pair it with a 12 or 24V strike supply and an operator, and you have immediate door release. In our experience, this simplicity translates to fewer callbacks and lower total deployment cost than networked alternatives when momentary switching is truly all you need. The SPDT contact routing gives you flexibility to wire fail-safe (door unlocked on power loss) or fail-secure (door locked unless actively released) depending on site security posture. That said, the plastic enclosure is the trade-off — it's not rated for outdoor direct weather or wet areas. We've seen moisture intrusion and corrosion in damp environments where integrators tried to avoid the cost of the aluminum NEMA-rated CM-810. Know your installation environment before selecting this model.

Technical Highlights:

  • 20A @ 12/24V DC: Sufficient for standard electric strikes (5–10A typical) and single electromagnets. If you're driving multiple parallel locks or high-current solenoids, verify the strike load; oversizing the switch adds cost without benefit, but undersizing causes chatter and premature contact wear.
  • SPDT Momentary Action: Press-to-activate, release-to-return. Eliminates held-contact complexity; the operator's finger duration doesn't affect strike engagement time, which is controlled by the strike itself or external timed relay.
  • 100,000 Cycle Life: At typical office activation rates (20–50 times per day), expect 5–10 years of service life before mechanical wear becomes visible. Reception desks and emergency exits exceed that rate — plan for mid-lifecycle replacement in high-traffic locations.
  • No Network / No Software: Hardwired electrical component. Zero dependency on power supplies, control panels, or software updates. Reliability in low-infrastructure sites (temporary deployments, retail kiosks, emergency exit backup) is a real operational advantage.
  • Dual Voltage Flexibility: 12 and 24V DC operation from the same switch. Reduces parts inventory if your site has mixed-voltage strike power supplies.

Deployment Considerations:

  • Momentary vs. Maintained Contact: Verify your strike accepts momentary activation (pulse). Some electromagnetic locks require sustained energization while the door is open. If your strike requires maintained contact, the CM-820 or a networked relay module is necessary. Review strike documentation before ordering.
  • Plastic Enclosure Limitation: The CM-830 is not NEMA-rated and not suitable for wet, washdown, or outdoor direct-weather installations. If your location is damp (basement release point, outdoor covered entryway), specify the CM-810 (aluminum NEMA-rated) instead, even if it costs more upfront. Corrosion and moisture intrusion will cause callbacks.
  • Fail-Safe vs. Fail-Secure Wiring: The SPDT contact can be wired either way. Common to strike positive, NC to ground = fail-secure (door locked when switch is released). Common to strike positive, NO to ground = fail-safe (door unlocked on power loss). Clarify your site's security posture and wire accordingly. Don't guess.
  • Wire Gauge and Distance: Use 18–16 gauge solid or stranded copper. For runs longer than 50 feet, consider 14 gauge to reduce voltage drop across the wire run. A sagging power rail (11.5V at the strike instead of 12V) causes sluggish lock release and operator frustration.
  • Mounting Surface Prep: Drill mounting holes cleanly; avoid over-torquing screws into plastic bosses. The unit is lightweight — wall-mount with suitable anchors if not screwing into wood or concrete. Don't rely on adhesive alone.

The CM-830 is the right choice for integrators who need simple, reliable, unpowered momentary switching in access control deployments — reception areas, guard stations, and emergency release points where direct operator activation is the only requirement. If your installation is indoors, low-traffic, and straightforward wiring is acceptable, this switch delivers decades of service with minimal maintenance. For outdoor, wet, or high-traffic environments, or if your strike requires sustained energization, step up to a NEMA-rated variant or networked relay module.
