The ATEN VC986 is an active Mini DisplayPort (male) to HDMI (female) adapter that bridges mDP source devices — workstations, laptops, or AV controllers with Mini DisplayPort outputs — to HDMI displays, monitors, or video walls. Because it is active, it handles signal conversion rather than relying on the source device to drive the HDMI load passively, which matters when the source's mDP output does not natively support passive conversion. The VC986 supports 4K resolution, 3D content, Deep Color, and HDCP 1.3 content protection, making it suitable for display deployments where protected content or high-resolution output is a requirement. Compliance with DisplayPort 1.2a and HDMI 4K/3D/Deep Color specifications is verified per the ATEN product page.
The VC986 is compatible with any Mini DisplayPort 1.2a source output, including systems from Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Apple that carry a white Mini DisplayPort connector. The HDMI Type A female output connects to any standard HDMI input — monitors, projectors, video processors, or HDMI-equipped displays. For use within ATEN AV and KVM switching deployments, this adapter resolves mDP-to-HDMI mismatches at the endpoint without requiring a full converter box or additional power supply. HDCP 1.3 support ensures compatibility with content-protected sources and displays in digital signage or boardroom AV contexts. It is not compatible with Thunderbolt-only ports that lack DisplayPort alternate mode, nor with DisplayPort 1.4 features such as DSC or HDR10.
Operating humidity is rated 0–80% RH non-condensing — avoid installation in environments with condensation risk such as unventilated server closets or exterior-adjacent spaces without climate control. The adapter is passive in terms of external power (the active conversion circuit draws power from the mDP bus); no separate power supply or driver installation is required. Plug the Mini DisplayPort male connector into the mDP source port and connect an HDMI cable to the female output. For rack-integrated AV or AV-over-IP source equipment using mDP outputs, ensure the source port is DP1.2a-compliant before deploying.
