Description

QNAP QXP-1600ES-A1164 16-Port SATA Host Bus Adapter

Overview

The QXP-1600ES-A1164 is a PCIe 3.0 x8 host bus adapter that adds 16 SATA ports to a compatible QNAP NAS or server via a 4-port Mini-SAS HD connector interface. The card exists specifically to bridge QNAP's QNAP expansion enclosures to a host system — if you're stacking TL-series JBOD enclosures onto an existing NAS for raw capacity growth, this is the card that makes the connection. Without it, TL-series JBOD units have no host path. PCIe 3.0 x8 delivers enough bandwidth headroom for sustained multi-drive throughput across all 16 SATA lanes simultaneously, which matters when you're running sequential workloads across a full enclosure of spinning drives or mixed SSD/HDD configurations.

Compatibility

The QXP-1600ES-A1164 is designed for QNAP's TL-series JBOD storage enclosures that use SATA drives. Compatible host systems must have an available PCIe 3.0 x8 (or wider) slot — a x4 slot will not seat this card correctly or may not operate at full bandwidth. This card is not a general-purpose SAS/SATA controller; it is architected specifically for QNAP's TL-series expansion ecosystem. Verify your target NAS or server has a free full-length PCIe slot before ordering. For builds involving SAS drives or non-QNAP enclosures, this card is not the right fit — look elsewhere in the NAS storage accessories lineup for SAS-capable HBAs.

Installation Notes

Installation requires seating the card in a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot on the host system, then connecting each of the 4 Mini-SAS HD ports to the corresponding ports on the TL-series JBOD enclosure using appropriate Mini-SAS HD cables (sold separately). Each Mini-SAS HD port carries 4 SATA lanes, totaling 16 SATA connections across all 4 ports. Confirm your host chassis has the physical clearance for a full-height add-in card and that the PCIe slot is not blocked by adjacent cards or heatsinks before installation.
