Description

QNAP QXP-3X8PES PCIe NAS-to-JBOD Expansion Card

Overview

The QXP-3X8PES is a PCIe Gen 3 x8 host bus adapter card purpose-built to extend raw storage capacity on a QNAP NAS by connecting it to a QNAP TL-series PCIe Interface JBOD enclosure. Running at up to 64 Gb/s — roughly 8 GB/s of sustained bandwidth — this card prevents the expansion link from becoming the bottleneck when reading or writing across a densely populated JBOD shelf. If you are running a QuTS hero or QTS system and need additional drive bays beyond what the NAS chassis provides, the QXP-3X8PES is the purpose-designed connection point for that expansion path.

Compatibility

The QXP-3X8PES is designed exclusively for use with QNAP NAS systems running either QTS or QuTS hero firmware. The host NAS must have a PCIe Gen 3 x8 (or wider) slot available. On the expansion side, this card connects to the QNAP TL-series PCIe Interface JBOD enclosures via the two SFF-8644 (Mini-SAS HD) ports — a 1x2 configuration that allows a single card to drive two JBOD links simultaneously, doubling the reachable expansion capacity from one slot. If your NAS model only exposes a PCIe x4 slot, confirm slot compatibility with the QNAP hardware compatibility list before ordering; a x8 card seated in a x4 slot may link at reduced bandwidth or not at all depending on the platform. Buyers sourcing compatible NAS expansion hardware should verify the specific TL-series JBOD model is listed as compatible with QXP-3X8PES on the QNAP support matrix.

Installation Notes

Install the card into a PCIe Gen 3 x8 (or x16) slot — the card will not deliver full 64 Gb/s throughput in a narrower slot. Use standard SFF-8644 Mini-SAS HD cables (not included) to connect the card's two ports to the corresponding SFF-8644 receptacles on the TL-series JBOD. The NAS must be powered down during card installation. After first boot, QTS or QuTS hero should recognize the attached JBOD automatically — no third-party driver installation is required under supported firmware versions. Ensure the NAS enclosure has adequate PCIe slot clearance, as a full-height bracket is standard on PCIe expansion cards in this class.
