Description

ACTi B511A 12MP Indoor Hemispheric Dome Camera

The ACTi B511A is a 12MP indoor hemispheric dome designed for panoramic surveillance in retail, office, and institutional environments where edge-to-edge coverage eliminates blind spots across expansive rooms. Built-in video analytics—VMD (Video Motion Detection) and People Counting—run directly on the device, delivering real-time occupancy tracking and motion alerts without external processing servers or VMS dependencies. The 1/1.7" sensor with 1.65mm fixed focal length captures 4072×3046 effective pixels at 198.5° horizontal viewing angle in fisheye mode, providing the coverage footprint of 4–6 fixed cameras from a single mount point. This is the form factor choice for facilities where a single vantage point must account for entire open spaces—retail floors, lobbies, warehouse receiving areas—without surveillance gaps.

Key Features

  • 12MP Sensor & Fisheye Optics: 1/1.7" sensor, 4072×3046 resolution, 198.5° horizontal viewing angle. Captures entire open rooms without pan/tilt, suitable for real-estate surveys and occupancy mapping.
  • PoE+ Class 3 Power: 802.3at standard—operates from any PoE+ enterprise switch without dedicated injectors. Draws ~13W, well within Class 3 budget.
  • WDR 130dB: Handles mixed lighting (sunlit windows, indoor fluorescent) and reduces ghosting in retail environments with variable ambient and accent lighting.
  • Edge Analytics (People Counting, VMD): Built-in processors execute motion detection and occupancy counting on-device. Reduces NVR CPU load and network bandwidth; enables real-time heatmap and occupancy-based alerts without VMS add-on modules.
  • IR 850nm, 20m Range, 0.003 lux Color Mode: Day/Night operation; IR activates automatically in darkness. Minimum illumination 0.003 lux (color) or full IR extends usability into unlit storage and loading areas.
  • H.264 (Baseline/Main/High) + MJPEG Codecs: H.264 at up to 30 fps @ 1920×1080 or 18 fps @ 4000×3000. MJPEG fallback ensures compatibility with older VMS platforms; codec selection per stream reduces re-encoding overhead.
  • ONVIF Multi-Profile Compliance: Supports Profiles S, G, T, Q, and M (M via future firmware). Integrates with Milestone Interconnect, Genetec Security Center, Axis Camera Station, and third-party NVRs without driver dependencies.
  • Flexible Mounting (Wall, Pole, Pendant, Corner, Rack): Adapts to facility geometry; pendant mount suits dropped ceilings; corner mount fits tight spaces. At 446g (0.983 lb), standard drywall anchors or pole clamps sufficient.
  • Audio Input & Built-in Microphone: Mic-in, line-in, line-out connectors enable audio recording or two-way intercom integration. Useful for retail floor communication or evidence capture in dispute scenarios.

The B511A's hemispheric form factor eliminates the operational and capex burden of multi-camera deployments in open-plan spaces. A retail floor typically requires 4–6 fixed domes or a PTZ to cover the equivalent area; here, one lens handles it. The edge analytics—People Counting and VMD—run without licensing fees or external server infrastructure; they're burned into the device firmware. For high-traffic retail, the ability to trigger occupancy alerts or generate hourly people-count heat maps from a single IP address reduces VMS complexity and license sprawl.

Integration with ONVIF-compliant VMS platforms is straightforward: the B511A responds to ONVIF Profile S out-of-the-box, with Profiles G, T, Q, and M available through firmware update. The device outputs H.264 or MJPEG via a single 1×RJ-45 Ethernet port; PoE+ power means no separate power infrastructure. Manual GPS position tagging supports multi-site deployments where location context feeds VMS event searches or geofencing workflows. For facilities with Axis speed domes (I95, I96, I97, I98, I915), the B511A serves as a coordinated overview camera—overview-and-zoom architecture where the dome autonomously tracks objects flagged by the hemispheric motion detection.

Operating range −10°C to 50°C (14°F to 122°F) restricts the B511A to climate-controlled indoor spaces; it is not rated for outdoor or semi-outdoor mounting. The 130dB WDR engine handles mixed indoor lighting (sunlit storefronts, fluorescent aisles, accent spotlights) without excessive ghosting or detail loss. At night or in unlit areas, 850nm IR automatically engages; 20m range covers most interior volumes. The device outputs 30 fps @ 1920×1080 or 18 fps @ 4000×3000—full 12MP recording at 18 fps requires roughly 180 Mbps uncompressed, or ~30–40 Mbps H.264 Main Profile at quality preset 4–5, fitting within a single 1 Gbps PoE+ uplink alongside other cameras.

Compliance: CE, FCC, EAC, UL (for optional PoE injector and DC 12V adapter). The B511A is sourced genuine, factory-new from the manufacturer. Pair with ONVIF-compatible NVR or VMS for immediate deployment—no proprietary software stack required. The hemispheric form factor is not suitable for perimeter or outdoor surveillance; it excels in retail, hospitality lobbies, warehouse receiving docks, and office open-plan areas where a single vantage point must cover expansive interior footprints and edge analytics (people counting, occupancy) drive operational insight.

Perspective based on aggregated IP Security Depot and affiliated engineering team experience.

In our experience, hemispheric domes have a narrow but valuable role in surveillance deployments. The B511A is not a replacement for fixed turrets or PTZs on perimeter or long-range scenes—it's a tool for interior panoramic coverage where you want single-camera simplicity and built-in edge processing. We've installed the B511A in retail environments (supermarkets, apparel stores, fast-casual restaurants), office open-plan layouts, and warehouse receiving areas where the 198.5° coverage eliminates the "six-camera grid" deployment model. The differentiator is the people-counting and VMD analytics baked into the device. On a retail floor, you're not outsourcing motion detection or occupancy queries to the NVR; the camera itself emits those events in real time. Pair it with a simple event-driven recording policy (record on motion, discard motion-free footage), and your storage footprint drops 50–70% versus 24/7 continuous recording across six conventional cameras. The tradeoff: fisheye distortion is inherent; if you need to zoom into faces or license plates, this is not the camera. The 12MP resolution and 4072×3046 native pixel count help, but digital zoom from hemispheric video is forensically weak compared to a dedicated box camera with optical zoom. Choose the B511A when panoramic occupancy and event awareness matter more than detail zoom.

Technical Highlights:

  • 1/1.7" CMOS Sensor, 4072×3046 Pixels: Delivers 12MP output from a compact hemispheric package. At native resolution, 18 fps is the limit; sub-resolution streams (1920×1080) hit 30 fps. In retail deployments, 18 fps @ 4000×3000 is adequate for occupancy and gross motion tracking; you won't use full resolution for 24/7 recording—it's 40+ Mbps H.264 per stream. Implement tiered recording: full 12MP on motion events, 1080p baseline for continuous archive.
  • People Counting & VMD On-Device: These analytics execute on the camera's processor, not on the NVR or external analytics server. You get real-time occupancy data and motion alerts with zero VMS plugin licensing or CPU overhead. In a 20-camera retail network, that's meaningful—each camera shoulders its own analytics burden, and the NVR is strictly a recorder and search engine.
  • H.264 Multi-Profile + MJPEG Fallback: Baseline, Main, and High profiles allow tuning for bitrate vs. quality. PoE+ Class 3 (~13W) is tight; H.264 High profile at 12MP will push 40+ Mbps. Use Baseline or Main for 24/7 recording; reserve High for event recordings. MJPEG fallback is a lifeline on older VMS or if H.264 licensing is restricted.
  • WDR 130dB Dynamic Range: Indoor retail lighting is notoriously mixed—sunlit storefronts, fluorescent aisles, spot accents. 130dB WDR (roughly 14 stops of dynamic range) is adequate for most interior scenarios without severe ghosting. Not equivalent to outdoor WDR (which must handle direct sunlight), but sufficient for climate-controlled spaces.
  • PoE+ Class 3, 802.3at: Standard enterprise PoE+ switch delivers power; no injector or separate DC supply required for basic operation. 13W draw leaves headroom on most campus switch uplinks. If you're running auxiliary heater or cooler (for extreme indoor climates), upgrade to DC 12V optional supply.
  • ONVIF Profile S + Future Multi-Profile Upgrade: Ship with Profile S; future firmware adds G, T, Q, M. Profile T adds H.265 and advanced metadata—useful for future-proofing, but not critical on day-one integration. Profile M is analytics-focused; ensure your NVR supports Profile M event subscriptions if you're leveraging on-camera people counting in a workflow.

Deployment Considerations:

  • Fisheye Distortion & Zoom Limits: The 198.5° panoramic view introduces barrel distortion—straight lines curve, and faces near the periphery appear warped. If your security brief includes facial recognition or license-plate detail capture, this is not the camera. Hemispheric domes are for occupancy, heatmapping, and gross motion alerts, not forensic identification. Know that upfront.
  • Interior-Only Installation: −10°C to 50°C operating range and lack of weatherproofing means no outdoor, semi-outdoor, or unheated storage mounting. Mounting accessories (wall, pole, pendant, corner, rack) assume clean, climate-controlled environments. If your facility includes covered loading docks or semi-sheltered entry vestibules with temperature swings, test thermal cycling before deployment.
  • Full-Resolution Recording is Expensive: 4072×3046 @ 18 fps in H.264 Main Profile requires ~30–35 Mbps. Over 24/7 for 30 days, that's roughly 7.8 TB per camera. Most retail deployments cut this by recording full resolution only on motion events, then falling back to 1080p baseline. Implement a tiered retention policy: 30 days 1080p baseline, 7 days 12MP events.
  • NVR Sub-Stream Support Critical: Ensure your NVR supports multi-stream recording from the B511A (e.g., main stream at 4000×3000, sub-stream at 1920×1080). Some older or entry-level NVRs do not; if so, you're locked into a single stream and forced to choose between full resolution or frame rate. Verify ONVIF multi-stream support before finalizing the VMS.
  • Audio Input Requires Cabling: The B511A has mic-in, line-in, and line-out connectors; the built-in microphone adds ambient sound without extra hardware. If you want high-quality audio (e.g., two-way intercom), route balanced line-in audio through dedicated conduit or leverage existing intercom infrastructure. Don't expect the on-camera mic to capture speech clarity in noisy retail floors.
  • GPS Tagging for Multi-Site Deployments: Manual GPS position setting is useful if you're running the camera in a location-aware VMS (Genetec integrates GPS coords into search/export); however, it's not auto-provisioned. Ensure your VMS supports GPS metadata in ONVIF events before relying on location-based workflows.

The B511A is the right choice for retail operations, office open-plan spaces, and warehouse receiving areas where single-camera panoramic coverage with built-in people counting and motion detection reduces both capex (fewer cameras) and operational overhead (no external analytics licensing). For perimeter security, high-detail forensic capture, or outdoor mounting, look to fixed turret or PTZ alternatives.
