ATEN VE170 CAT5 VGA and Audio Extender
Overview
The ATEN VE170 is a CAT5-based VGA and audio extender designed to push analog video and stereo audio signals well beyond the practical limit of a direct VGA cable run. The VE170 transmitter (VE170T) accepts a VGA source and a mini stereo audio input, then drives the signal over standard Cat5/5e/6 UTP — useful in digital signage, training rooms, or AV distribution scenarios where a display or projector must sit far from the source without running dedicated coax or fiber. At 30 meters, the unit sustains full 1920×1200 resolution, preserving detail on large-format displays. Extending to 300 meters drops resolution to 1024×768 — adequate for status boards, lobby signage, or secondary monitoring positions where pixel density is less critical. The 75 Ω impedance matches standard VGA signal termination, keeping the image clean over the cable run.
Compatibility
The VE170T transmitter is the sending unit of the ATEN VE170 kit; it pairs with the VE170R receiver at the display end. The system is compatible with any VGA-output source — PCs, servers, media players, or industrial controllers — and any VGA-input display or projector. Audio is carried via a standard 3.5mm mini stereo jack (green, female), compatible with PC audio outputs and active speaker systems. The Cat5 run must be unshielded or shielded twisted-pair; patch cable quality affects image sharpness at longer distances, so solid-core cable is preferable for permanent in-wall runs.
Installation Notes
Operating humidity is rated 0–80% RH non-condensing, so avoid runs through unconditioned spaces subject to condensation. Power is supplied via DC jack on the transmitter unit — confirm the correct power adapter is included or available before installation. Maximum cable distance for full HD output is 30 meters; plan your cable route accordingly before committing to in-wall or plenum runs.
