Description

HPE 882251-B21 100GbE QSFP28 Optical Transceiver

Overview

The HPE 882251-B21 is a 100Gbps QSFP28 transceiver designed for short-reach 100 Gigabit Ethernet links in structured cabling environments. It targets data center top-of-rack and inter-switch deployments where you need to connect HPE switching or server hardware across patch panels or within an MDF/IDF over multimode fiber — without stepping down to slower optics or paying for longer-reach single-mode alternatives you don't need.

Compatibility

The 882251-B21 is an HPE-branded optic validated for use in HPE switching and server platforms that expose QSFP28 ports, including the HPE FlexFabric and Aruba CX switch families that support 100GbE uplinks. As with all vendor-coded optics, confirm port compatibility against your specific HPE switch or adapter model before ordering — QSFP28 is the physical standard, but firmware validation tables on HPE platforms determine which part numbers are accepted without generating unsupported-transceiver alerts. Third-party or uncoded QSFP28 optics will not substitute in HPE-locked port configurations.

Installation Notes

Rated for 100m reach, this transceiver is sized for OM4 multimode fiber. If your runs approach or exceed that distance, measure actual cable length including patch cords and any connectorized segments before committing — multimode budget erodes faster than the raw distance figure suggests when connector polish quality or bend radius is marginal. Clean fiber endfaces before insertion; contamination is the leading cause of link errors at 100G. The QSFP28 form factor is hot-swappable — no power cycle required on supported platforms.
