Overview

The SMX1500RMI2U is a 1500VA / 1200W line-interactive UPS from the APC Smart-UPS family, built for 2U rack deployment in server rooms, network closets, and security head-end enclosures. Line-interactive topology means the unit continuously conditions incoming power without switching to battery on every minor voltage sag — reducing battery cycle wear and keeping connected gear on clean, regulated 230V AC. True sine wave output ensures compatibility with active PFC power supplies common in modern servers, NVRs, and managed switches; modified-sine alternatives can cause overheating or trip PFC-equipped PSUs. With a 645J surge energy rating and full-time multi-pole noise filtering rated to 5% IEEE surge let-through, the SMX1500RMI2U protects sensitive network and surveillance equipment from transients that would otherwise degrade connected hardware over time.

Compatibility

Designed for rack-mounted IT and security infrastructure drawing 230V AC via IEC 320 C14 input — servers, NVRs, PoE switches, routers, and point-of-sale systems. The eight IEC 320 C13 output receptacles plus two IEC jumper outlets support mixed-load rack builds. Replacement battery is the APCRBC115 (1 RBC, 3–5 year expected service life). The single expansion slot accepts APC SmartSlot network management cards for remote monitoring and automated shutdown via PowerChute software. USB and RS-232 serial ports enable direct integration with Windows, Linux, and VMware hosts for graceful shutdown orchestration. The unit ships with APC PowerChute software on CD for immediate host-side management without additional licensing cost.

Installation Notes

Mounts in 2U of rack space using the included rack mounting support rails; removable support feet allow temporary tower use during staging. APC recommends lower-bay mounting preference for rack stability with the 30 kg unit weight. Input connection is IEC 320 C14 (10A rated) — verify your PDU or wall outlet supports a C13-to-C14 patch lead before installation. Acoustic output is rated at 40 dBA; factor this into deployments in noise-sensitive environments. Operating altitude is rated to 10,000 ft (3,048m); derate runtime expectations above that threshold. Recharge time to full capacity is approximately 3 hours from a fully discharged state.
