In retail environments, space under the counter or above the door is precious; a compact x86 terminal that runs both POS client software and a lightweight ONVIF recorder eliminates the need for two separate appliances, reducing capex and integration complexity. The TPM 2.0 module is the differentiator we see overlooked most often: in loss-prevention scenarios, having hardware-backed encryption for concurrent POS transactions and surveillance metadata prevents a single compromised OS credential from leaking both payment card data and forensic video evidence. That separation is worth the upgrade cost alone.

That said, the J1900 is not a beast. We don't recommend it for facilities trying to record more than four camera streams simultaneously or decode 4K content in real time.
