Description

Axis TU8004 90W PoE++ Midspan Injector

The Axis TU8004 is a midspan PoE++ injector designed for network video deployments where existing switch infrastructure cannot supply sufficient inline power to high-demand cameras, PTZs, and edge analytics appliances. Delivering 90W at 57V DC with automatic detection of PoE, PoE+, High PoE, and PoE++ endpoints, the TU8004 bridges the gap between legacy network switches and modern surveillance hardware — eliminating the need for costly network rewiring or dedicated power runs to individual devices.

Key Features

  • 90W Power Output: 57V DC, 0.8A per channel on dual power delivery channels. Powers the full range of Axis PTZs, multi-sensor cameras, and edge AI appliances without auxiliary power supplies.
  • Auto-Detection: Intelligently detects and negotiates PoE, PoE+ (802.3at), High PoE, and PoE++ (802.3bt) endpoints. Devices receive only the power class they request — no over-powering, no wasted capacity.
  • Gigabit-Plus Ethernet: Supports 10/100/1000/2500/5000 Mbps passthrough. Data integrity maintained across all speed classes; no packet loss or latency penalty.
  • Flexible Mounting: Wall mount, shelf mount, or DIN rail installation. Compact 166 × 80 × 44mm footprint fits standard network racks, server closets, or outdoor pedestals.
  • Global AC Input: 100–240V, 50–60 Hz. Single unit deploys across US, EU, APAC, and other regions without voltage converters.
  • Real-Time Diagnostics: Power and PoE status LEDs indicate input supply, active power delivery, and device-class detection at a glance.
  • Dual Shielded Connectors: RJ45 inputs and outputs support EIA 568A/568B wiring standards. Shielding reduces EMI in electrically noisy environments (near HVAC, lighting systems, industrial motor drives).
  • Environmental Compliance: PVC-free, halogen-free casing. IEC/EN/UL 62368-1, FCC Part 15 Class B, EN 55032/55035, RCM, and CCC certifications ensure global regulatory acceptance and safe operation in commercial and industrial settings.

The TU8004 operates reliably across -20°C to 40°C at full 90W output, enabling outdoor pedestal and harsh-environment deployments. Thermal derating applies at temperature extremes: 60W at -20°C to 60°C, 30W at -20°C to 65°C. Power consumption of the midspan itself is just 0.2W, so losses are negligible in the infrastructure footprint.

Power distribution is intelligent and safe: the unit delivers power over data pairs 1/2 and 3/6, with return paths on pairs 7/8 and 4/5. This four-pair architecture, combined with dual 0.8A channels, ensures compliance with 802.3bt High Power specifications and eliminates thermal stress on individual wire pairs — a key reliability differentiator against single-channel midspan designs that risk conductor heating under sustained 90W draw.

Integration with existing NVR and network infrastructure is transparent. The TU8004 requires no configuration: plug in AC power, connect the network upstream to the input port, and daisy-chain cameras downstream to the output port. ONVIF-compliant cameras negotiate power class automatically. Legacy non-ONVIF endpoints receive PoE at the injector's default safety profile (typically PoE or PoE+ signature). A single TU8004 can inject power for multiple devices on the same Ethernet segment, or multiple units can be cascaded for large deployments (each injector supplies one output port; data passes through unimpeded).

Total cost of ownership favors the midspan approach in retrofit scenarios: avoiding CAT6A conduit runs to every camera location and the labor to terminate new cabling can save thousands in multi-story buildings or outdoor perimeter installations. The 500g weight and compact profile make the TU8004 a fit-and-forget addition to network cabinets or external weatherproof enclosures.

Perspective based on aggregated IP Security Depot and affiliated engineering team experience.

We've deployed the Axis TU8004 across retail, hospitality, and industrial sites where existing PoE+ switches couldn't keep pace with multi-megapixel camera rollouts or edge-analytics-enabled PTZs. The real win is simplicity: no switching upgrades, no planning ahead for future power consumption — just plug the injector into any 802.3at switch and it handles power negotiation automatically. We've also seen integrators use the TU8004 as insurance against switch failure: a single midspan powering a cluster of critical cameras means swapping the midspan is faster than replacing a stack of switches or reterminating your entire building. Against competing solutions (Cambium PoE Max, Ubiquiti PoE++ injectors), the Axis unit stands out for shielded connectors — in electrically noisy warehouses or manufacturing floors with variable-frequency drives and arc welders, that shielding eliminated intermittent camera dropouts we'd traced to common-mode noise on the Ethernet return path. The auto-detection of power class is also more reliable than some aftermarket units that require DIP switches or web configuration.

Technical Highlights:

  • Dual-Channel 0.8A Architecture: High-power cameras (Axis Q62xx PTZs, some Hanwha 4K+ models) demand sustained 80–90W delivery. Splitting power across two independent 0.8A channels keeps conductor temperature well within limits even at full draw, versus single-channel designs that can experience voltage sag or safety shutdown under sustained load. This design choice directly impacts uptime.
  • 2.5 and 5Gbps Passthrough: Future-proofing your network layer. We've already seen Axis release cameras with 5Gbps modules; the TU8004 doesn't become a bottleneck as you upgrade. Data bandwidth is separate from power bandwidth, so 90W delivery and 5Gbps streaming don't contend for the same resource.
  • Shielded RJ45 and EMI Compliance: EN 55032 Class B means this unit has undergone radiated and conducted EMI testing. In HVAC plenums, near lighting dimmer circuits, or outdoor pedestals adjacent to cellular antennas, that shielding and filter design matter. We've seen unshielded units introduce noise floor elevation on longer cable runs (>50m) that degraded video quality in low-light scenes.
  • Wide Temperature at Full 90W: Operating -20°C to 40°C at full power output is a rare spec in the midspan category. Most competitors derate to 60W at 40°C or require external fans. This unit's thermal design (presumably heavier heatsinking) enables outdoor pedestal deployment in hot climates without derating.
  • Input Voltage Flexibility: 100–240V AC, 50–60 Hz with no manual switch. A single SKU serves global deployments. We've reduced inventory complexity and avoided customs hold-ups from region-specific variants.

Deployment Considerations:

  • The TU8004 is a midspan, not an endspan: it sits between your PoE+ switch and the camera. If your switch is a non-PoE dumb switch, the TU8004 will not receive power from the camera side — you must supply AC input. Verify AC outlet or UPS availability in your installation location.
  • Daisy-chaining multiple TU8004 units on the same Ethernet trunk works, but each injector consumes one port (or one pair of output/input ports if you're using them sequentially). In a dense multi-camera deployment, you may need multiple injectors or a PoE++ switch upgrade for scalability. Plan ahead if you anticipate >3 high-power cameras on a single network segment.
  • The 0.2W idle power draw is minimal, but in a large-scale deployment (10+ units), that's still 2W continuous. UPS runtime calculations should account for this if the injectors are on backup power.
  • Thermal derating below 0°C and above 40°C is documented (60W at 60°C, 30W at 65°C). If you're deploying in a non-air-conditioned outdoor enclosure in a hot climate, verify that your highest-power camera fits within the thermal de-rating envelope. Most cameras operate fine at 60W, but multi-sensor or PTZ units may require the full 90W only in summer.
  • Shielded RJ45 connectors require proper grounding of the shield on at least one end (typically the cabinet side) to be effective. If your patch panel is unshielded, the EMI immunity benefit is reduced. Document your wiring standard to ensure the installer terminates and grounds appropriately.

The Axis TU8004 is the go-to choice for system architects retrofitting high-power cameras into existing non-PoE++ infrastructure, and for integrators who want to reduce switch upgrade complexity and cost without sacrificing power delivery reliability. For large new-build projects where you can spec a PoE++ switch from the ground up, a native switch solution eliminates the midspan entirely — but in the 80% of installations that involve existing network gear, the TU8004 is a smart, cost-effective bridge. See the Axis catalog for complementary networking and power products.
