Description

ATEN VS172 2-Port DVI Dual-Link Splitter with Audio and RS-232 Control

Overview

The ATEN VS172 is a 2-port DVI dual-link splitter that distributes a single DVI video source to two displays simultaneously, carrying stereo audio and exposing RS-232 serial control on the same unit. If you're deploying a digital signage loop, a control-room secondary monitor, or a training station where one source must feed two screens without a KVM or matrix switch in the path, the VS172 handles the distribution in a single rackmountable device. The RS-232 port (DB-9 female, 19200 baud, 8N1) lets you integrate the VS172 into an AMX, Crestron, or custom serial-control environment — useful when the display environment is already managed by room automation. EDID handling is configurable: Default, Port 1, or Auto modes let you tune resolution negotiation so both connected displays report the correct EDID back to the source rather than forcing a lowest-common-denominator handshake.

Compatibility

Works with any DVI dual-link source output — graphics cards, servers, workstations, or AV processors with DVI-D or DVI-I dual-link ports. The two outputs (Mini Stereo Jack Female, 3.5mm green) carry standard PC audio, compatible with powered monitors and active speaker systems with 3.5mm input. The RS-232 control tool (Windows, v1.0.064) is available for direct PC-based serial management. Firmware v1.1.103 is the current release. Not suited for HDMI or DisplayPort sources without an active adapter upstream, and not a KVM — keyboard and USB peripherals are not switched.

Installation Notes

Max cable distance from source to unit is 1.8 m — plan rack placement accordingly if source equipment is in a separate bay. Signal impedance is 100 Ω; use quality DVI dual-link cables to avoid signal degradation at the rated distance. Operating humidity ceiling is 80% RH non-condensing — standard for indoor rack environments. Power via DC jack (supply must be sourced separately if not included). Rack-mount form factor: confirm 1U clearance; ATEN uses L×W×H notation on rack products.
