Description

Fortinet FN-TRAN-QSFP28-CWDM4 100GE QSFP28 CWDM4 Transceiver Module

Overview

The FN-TRAN-QSFP28-CWDM4 is a 100 Gigabit Ethernet QSFP28 transceiver module using CWDM4 (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology for long-range links up to 2km over single-mode fiber with an LC duplex connector. This is the right module when you need full 100GE throughput across campus backbones, inter-building runs, or data center interconnects where direct-attach copper falls short at distance — CWDM4 multiplexes four wavelengths over a single SMF pair, keeping fiber plant requirements manageable while delivering wire-rate 100G. The LC interface makes it compatible with standard SMF patch panels and structured cabling already deployed in most enterprise environments.

Compatibility

The FN-TRAN-QSFP28-CWDM4 is designed for use in Fortinet platforms with QSFP28 slots supporting 100GE line cards and chassis. Compatible product families include the FortiGate next-generation firewall series with 100GE QSFP28 interfaces, FortiSwitch high-density aggregation and core switches with QSFP28 uplink ports, and FortiExtender or FortiConnect platforms where 100GE QSFP28 optical interfaces are supported. Verify your specific chassis slot specification against Fortinet's transceiver compatibility matrix before ordering — not all QSFP28 slots support the CWDM4 variant across every firmware revision. Third-party QSFP28 switches may also accept this module, but Fortinet-branded transceivers are validated and intended for use within the Fortinet networking and security portfolio. For deployments involving 100GE optical transceivers in mixed-vendor environments, confirm MSA compliance with the receiving equipment vendor.

Installation Notes

Requires single-mode fiber (SMF) — this module will not operate correctly over multimode fiber. Maximum reach is 2km; beyond that, signal integrity degrades without amplification or regeneration. Use LC duplex patch cables or LC-to-LC SMF jumpers matched to the fiber plant. Handle the QSFP28 module with standard ESD precautions and insert fully into the cage until the latch clicks. Clean fiber end-faces before insertion — contamination at the LC interface is the leading cause of link failure at 100G. Remove the dust cap only immediately before insertion. For structured cabling design considerations, review your core switching infrastructure to confirm QSFP28 cage compatibility and supported optical standards per slot.
