Description

StarTech USB2001EXTV USB 2.0 Extender Kit

Overview

The StarTech USB2001EXTV is a USB 2.0 extender kit designed to overcome the standard 16-foot (5m) USB limitation. It allows you to connect a USB 2.0 device, such as a webcam, printer, or industrial sensor, up to 165 feet (50 meters) away from the host computer using readily available Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cabling. This is crucial for deployments where the host PC must be located in a secure, climate-controlled environment, away from the operational area of the USB peripheral. The kit includes both a local and a remote unit, along with a power adapter for the remote unit, ensuring full USB 2.0 speed (480Mbps) is maintained over the extended distance.

Compatibility

This extender kit is compatible with any USB 2.0 device and supports OS-independent operation across Windows, macOS, and Linux. It requires a Cat5e UTP cable or better for optimal performance. The local unit connects to the host via a USB Mini-B port, and the remote unit provides a standard USB 2.0 Type-A port for device connection. The included power adapter (100-240V AC input, 5V DC output at 2A) is essential for powering the remote unit, which in turn powers the connected USB device, provided the device's power draw does not exceed 2A.

Installation Notes

The local unit connects to the host computer's USB port using the included cable. The remote unit is placed near the USB device. Both units connect to each other via a standard RJ-45 Ethernet cable (Cat5e or Cat6 recommended, maximum distance 165ft/50m). The remote unit requires connection to the provided power adapter. Ensure the connected USB device does not draw more than 2A of power from the remote unit's USB port. Operating temperature range is 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F).
