Overview

The HPE JL485A is a 25 Gbps SFP28 transceiver rated for 400 m reach — the right module when you need to push 25GbE between a HPE networking switch and a server or spine switch across a mid-distance run that standard DAC cables cannot cover. SFP28 delivers 25 Gbps per lane in a compact form factor, giving you direct upgrade headroom from 10G infrastructure without changing port density. At 400 m, the JL485A covers inter-building runs in campus or data-center environments where copper direct-attach won't reach but a long-range module would be over-specced and more expensive.

Compatibility

Designed for HPE switches and platforms with SFP28 ports. Compatible host platforms within HPE's switching line include the FlexFabric and Aruba CX series switches that carry SFP28 slots. Verify your specific chassis model supports 25GbE SFP28 transceivers before ordering — not all HPE platforms with SFP cages accept SFP28; the cage must be rated for 25G operation. The JL485A is coded for HPE equipment; compatibility with third-party switches depends on whether the target platform accepts HPE-coded modules. If you are integrating into a mixed-vendor environment, confirm interoperability with your switch vendor before deployment. For NVR or server uplink deployments, pair with a host NIC or server HBA that carries a matching SFP28 port.

Installation Notes

SFP28 modules are hot-pluggable — no power cycle required for insertion. Seat the JL485A firmly until the latch clicks; a partially seated module will not link. The 400 m reach specification requires a compatible fiber medium and a clean, polished connector end-face — contamination is the leading cause of link failures at distance. Clean both the transceiver port and the patch cable end-face with an IEC 61300-3-35-compliant cleaner before insertion. Do not exceed the module's rated bend radius on the fiber patch run. Match fiber type precisely to the module specification; using the wrong fiber type will degrade reach and may prevent the link from training. For uplink planning in larger deployments, review your switch power and port budgets to ensure adequate SFP28 slot allocation across your stack.
