Overview
The HPE J9281D is a 1-meter, 10G direct attach copper (DAC) twinax cable with SFP+ connectors on both ends. It eliminates the cost of discrete SFP+ transceivers for short-distance, high-speed switch-to-switch or switch-to-server links — a practical choice anywhere two 10GbE-capable devices sit within 1 meter of each other, such as top-of-rack switch uplinks, server interconnects inside a single rack, or NVR-to-core-switch trunk runs in compact surveillance equipment racks. Passive copper construction draws no power from the host port, keeping switch power budgets tighter than optical alternatives. The J9281D ships with a limited lifetime warranty and is factory-new, sourced direct from HPE or a US-stocking distributor.
Compatibility
Designed for HPE networking platforms with SFP+ slots running at 10G, including the ProCurve and FlexFabric switch families — specifically the 5900, 5920, 5500, 3800, 2920, and 2530 series, as well as HPE FlexFabric 7900 and 12900 chassis modules. Also compatible with any standards-compliant SFP+ port on third-party switches, servers, or NVRs that accept passive DAC cables. Passive DAC reach tops out near 7 meters for 10G; the J9281D's 1-meter length is optimized for same-rack or adjacent-rack deployments — not inter-rack runs. If your endpoints are farther than 1 meter apart, consider a longer DAC variant or an optical SFP+ transceiver instead.
Installation Notes
No tools required — seat each SFP+ connector firmly until the latch clicks. Passive DAC cables are not hot-swap sensitive in the way optical modules are, but avoid sharp bends below the cable's minimum bend radius; twinax construction is stiffer than fiber and will take a set if kinked. The 30.5 cm x 30.5 cm footprint at each end accounts for connector overhang — verify clearance before routing in dense patch panels. Weight is 95.3 g; cable management arms in 1U shelves handle this without reinforcement. Requires no firmware configuration — the switch auto-negotiates 10G on insertion for HPE platforms; on third-party gear, confirm DAC support is enabled in the port profile before insertion.
