Overview

The S3N89A is HPE Aruba Networking's 100 Gigabit LR QSFP28 transceiver engineered for single-mode fiber runs up to 10km — the reach specification that makes it the correct choice for inter-building campus links and data center interconnects where multimode SFPs fall short. With an LC duplex interface, it drops into existing LC-terminated SMF infrastructure without re-terminating cable plants. For environments running HPE Aruba switching infrastructure at 100G spine or uplink tiers, the S3N89A eliminates the need for active media conversion or fiber upgrades on established SMF runs.

Compatibility

The S3N89A is designed for use with HPE Aruba networking platforms that expose QSFP28 ports, including 100G-capable Aruba CX spine and core switches. QSFP28 is the standard 100G module form factor across the industry, but HPE transceivers are validated against HPE firmware and DOM (digital optical monitoring) implementation — third-party modules may trigger warnings or disable DOM telemetry on Aruba CX switches. Verify compatibility against your specific switch model's supported optics list before ordering. For backbone fiber planning, consult a network switch or structured cabling resource to confirm SMF strand availability between endpoints.

Installation Notes

Insert into any QSFP28-designated port with the bail-latch facing out; the module is keyed and cannot seat incorrectly. Clean LC ferrules before insertion — contamination on SMF connectors is the leading cause of link-budget failures at 100G. The 10km reach is a maximum under clean, low-loss conditions; patch panels, connectors, and splice points all consume budget. Pull and re-seat the bail latch to remove — do not yank the fiber cable. Handle with an ESD wrist strap; QSFP28 laser components are static-sensitive.
