HPE C7976AN LTO-6 Ultrium Tape Cartridge 20-Pack
Overview
The HPE C7976AN is a 20-cartridge pack of LTO-6 Ultrium non-custom-label data tape media, purpose-built for enterprise backup and archival workloads. Each cartridge stores 2.5 TB native (6.25 TB compressed at 2.5:1 ratio), giving the full pack a combined capacity of 50 TB native and 125 TB compressed — meaningful headroom for multi-server backup windows or tiered archival rotation. Native data transfer runs at 160 MB/s per cartridge; at that throughput, a single cartridge fills in roughly four hours of sustained streaming, so plan drive availability accordingly. Hardware-level AES-256 encryption is built into the LTO-6 format itself, keeping data protected without a separate encryption appliance in the backup chain. LTFS (Linear Tape File System) support lets compatible software and operating systems treat the cartridge as a conventional file system, which simplifies data retrieval without proprietary middleware. Shelf life is rated up to 30 years under proper storage conditions (18–23 °C, 20–50% RH), making this format a viable long-term offline archive option alongside active data storage infrastructure.
Compatibility
The C7976AN is formatted for LTO-6 Ultrium drives and is read/write compatible with LTO-5 drives and read-compatible with LTO-4 drives — the standard two-generation backward read compatibility of the LTO format. Compatible drives include HPE StoreEver LTO-6 Ultrium 6250 tape drives and the MSL tape library series equipped with LTO-6 drive modules. For environments using IBM TS2260, Quantum Scalar, or other OEM LTO-6 compliant drives, verify the drive firmware supports non-custom-label (standard barcode) media before deploying. The non-custom-label designation means cartridges ship with standard pre-printed barcode labels suitable for automated library use without requiring a separate label application step — confirm your library's barcode format matches the label range included before purchasing for high-density automated slots.
Installation Notes
Store unused cartridges at 18–23 °C and 20–50% relative humidity; acclimate cartridges to the operating environment for at least 24 hours before first use if transported from significantly different conditions. Do not expose cartridges to magnetic fields, direct sunlight, or contaminants. Rotate cartridges out of heavy-use slots per your backup software's media lifecycle tracking — LTO-6 specifies a finite load/unload cycle count, and most enterprise backup suites flag cartridges approaching end-of-life automatically.
