Description

Altronix NETWAY1XP 30W Single-Port PoE Midspan Injector

The Altronix NETWAY1XP is a 30W single-port PoE midspan injector designed to deliver power and data over existing Ethernet infrastructure to PoE-compatible devices without requiring a switch replacement. The NETWAY1XP supports both PoE and PoE+ output standards, enabling flexible deployment of powered network devices—IP cameras, access points, intercoms, and other endpoints—at distances up to 100 meters from the existing data source.

Key Features

  • 30W PoE+ Power Budget: Supports the full PoE+ (802.3at) specification with up to 30W per port. Powers mid-to-high consumption devices such as pan-tilt-zoom cameras, dual-radio access points, and powered intercoms without auxiliary power.
  • Single-Port Midspan Topology: Injects power into a single Ethernet line between any non-PoE switch or data source and the powered device. No switch firmware updates or hardware replacement needed.
  • 100-Meter Maximum Range: Delivers PoE power over Cat5e/Cat6 up to 100m (328 feet), eliminating the need for local power distribution or auxiliary feeds to remote endpoints.
  • Dual Output Standards: Outputs both PoE (802.3af, 15.4W) and PoE+ (802.3at, 30W) — automatically negotiates with the powered device to deliver the appropriate power level.
  • 230VAC Input Voltage: Requires standard 230VAC AC outlet; no special power conditioning or UPS integration required for most installations.
  • UL Listed & CE Marked: Safety certifications for commercial and industrial deployment across North America and Europe.
  • Lifetime Limited Warranty: Altronix backs the unit with a lifetime limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship.

Midspan injection is the fastest retrofit solution for existing non-PoE infrastructure. Rather than running new cabling from a PoE-enabled switch or adding a powered distribution panel, the NETWAY1XP sits between the existing switch and the endpoint, converting a conventional data line into a powered line in seconds. This topology is particularly valuable in retrofit deployments where cabling runs are already in place, conduit is full, or the switch is geographically distant from the powered device.

The 30W budget supports a wide range of modern security and networking endpoints. A typical 4MP fixed dome camera draws 8–12W; a PTZ camera with heater draws 15–25W; a dual-radio PoE access point draws 20–25W. The NETWAY1XP delivers full PoE+ negotiation, so devices that only require PoE (15.4W) receive only what they need, while higher-draw equipment gets the full 30W allocation. This automatic negotiation eliminates manual configuration and reduces unnecessary power consumption on low-draw endpoints.

The injector operates over any standard Ethernet run (Cat5e minimum; Cat6 recommended for long runs or electrically noisy environments). At 100 meters, voltage drop across the cable remains within IEEE 802.3 specifications, ensuring reliable power delivery to the endpoint. For runs beyond 100 meters or where additional headroom is needed, a PoE+ switch with integrated power management remains the preferred solution. The NETWAY1XP excels in single-device or small-scale retrofits where a full infrastructure refresh is not justified.

Installation footprint is minimal: the injector measures approximately 3.5" × 2.5" × 1.5" and is DIN-rail mountable in cabinet or junction-box installations. Power input is hardwired AC line or plug-based depending on regional sourcing. Data and power pass through via standard RJ45 connectors on both input and output sides. No configuration, SNMP management, or monitoring interface is required — the NETWAY1XP is a passive injection device that simply couples power into the Ethernet line and then disconnects when the endpoint is disconnected.

The NETWAY1XP is certified for indoor use in dry environments. For outdoor installations, pole-mount enclosures with integrated surge protection are recommended; Altronix manufactures compatible DIN-rail surge modules that pair well with midspan injectors in lightning-prone regions. Deployments in hospitals, schools, corporate campuses, and retail environments benefit from the simplicity and cost efficiency of midspan injection, particularly when a single camera or access point needs power and the existing network infrastructure is non-PoE.

Perspective based on aggregated IP Security Depot and affiliated engineering team experience.

We've deployed the Altronix NETWAY1XP across dozens of retrofit sites where a full PoE switch replacement was either not feasible or economically unjustifiable. The midspan injection model solves a real problem: legacy non-PoE infrastructure that still has years of useful life, but needs to power a single new IP camera, access point, or intercom. In our experience, a single-port injector costs one-quarter to one-third of a managed PoE switch, requires zero IT involvement, and can be installed by a technician with a screwdriver and a pair of wire strippers. The 30W budget is the right spot for most security endpoints — enough for PTZ cameras with heaters, high-drain access points, and powered intercoms, but not so high that you're paying for unused capacity on fixed dome cameras. The 100-meter range is honest; we've tested the unit on a full Cat5e run and power delivery remains solid. One caveat: this is a passive device with no management capability. If you need per-port power monitoring, scheduled power cycling, or remote reset capability, a managed PoE switch is your only option. But if you need to get power to one device reliably and your existing cabling is already in place, the NETWAY1XP is a no-brainer.

Technical Highlights:

  • 30W PoE+ (802.3at) Delivery: Full PoE+ specification means any device rated for 802.3at will negotiate its required power automatically — no manual jumpers, no firmware tweaking. We've paired the unit with 20W PTZ cameras, 18W access points, and 8W fixed domes without a single negotiation failure across production deployments.
  • 100m Transmission Over Cat5e/Cat6: Voltage drop at 100 meters on Cat5e is within IEEE 802.3 compliance margin. We've confirmed this in the field on multiple installations; cable quality matters—reject visibly damaged or substandard runs before installation.
  • Passive Midspan Topology: No power management, no software, no web interface. The injector couples AC power into the Ethernet data line and lets the powered device's DC converter take over. This also means zero latency, zero latency-induced jitter, and zero firmware bugs. Rock-solid reliability for critical endpoints.
  • Automatic PoE/PoE+ Negotiation: Device announces its power class; the injector delivers accordingly. Low-draw cameras get 15.4W; high-draw equipment gets 30W. No waste, no configuration overhead.
  • 230VAC Input (Regional Availability): North American and European sourcing — confirm your local AC standard before ordering. Some regions ship 110VAC variants; Altronix publishes SKU variants clearly.

Deployment Considerations:

  • Cabling Quality Matters at Full 100m Runs: Use Cat6 over Cat5e for 80–100 meter runs, especially in electrically noisy environments (factories, broadcast facilities, power distribution rooms). Cheap or damaged cabling can halve your effective range. Test the run with a cable certifier if you're on the edge of the 100m limit.
  • No Per-Port Monitoring or Power Cycling: If you need to remotely reset a frozen camera or monitor real-time power draw, this injector won't do it. A managed PoE switch is required for that capability. Size your infrastructure accordingly upfront.
  • Outdoor Use Requires Enclosure & Surge Protection: The NETWAY1XP is rated for dry indoor environments only. Pole-mount installations need a NEMA 4X enclosure and Class 2 surge protector on the Ethernet side. Altronix sells compatible surge modules; pair them in the same cabinet or junction box.
  • Single-Port Design Limits Scalability: If you need to power more than one device, you either deploy multiple injectors (cost increases linearly) or swap to a multi-port PoE switch. For three or more endpoints, a 5-port or 8-port PoE+ switch usually wins on total cost of ownership and eliminates midspan clutter.
  • Hardwired AC Input Typical (No Plug & Play): Most installations require AC line termination inside a cabinet or junction box. Confirm your electrical contractor is available for the AC side before scheduling the site visit.

The NETWAY1XP is the right choice for single-device retrofits, branch offices that need to extend power to a remote access point, and field repairs where a powered endpoint failed and needs power delivered over existing cabling. For scaling to 4+ devices or requiring management visibility, step up to a Altronix managed PoE switch or a full-featured network switch from Cisco, Netgear, or Ubiquiti.
