The Panduit CMBIG-X is a Mini-Com™ blank insert module designed to reserve unused module positions in patch panels, wall plates, and surface-mount boxes during phased network deployments. Molded from ABS plastic in International Gray (RAL 7035 equivalent), this filler module maintains a clean, professional appearance while keeping open ports protected from dust and debris until additional jacks are installed. Integrators use blank modules to future-proof installations where the final port count is uncertain or where budget constraints require staged rollouts—an essential component for datacenter build-outs, campus networks, and commercial office deployments where infrastructure planning extends across multiple fiscal years.
The CMBIG-X ships in 10-unit packages, a quantity that aligns with common deployment scenarios: a 24-port patch panel delivered with 16 active jacks and 8 blanks for future expansion, or a 12-position faceplate in a conference room where only 4 drops are active at move-in. The snap-fit design mirrors Panduit's keystone jack retention mechanism, so installers use the same installation motion—press the module into the panel cavity until the locking tabs engage. No screws, clips, or secondary hardware. When a new circuit goes live, pull the blank module and snap in the jack. The gray ABS material is dense enough to stay seated during routine rack vibration but soft enough that removal won't crack the panel frame, a consideration in high-density 48-port panels where module spacing is tight.
International Gray was selected as the default color because it visually recedes in populated panels, drawing attention to active ports rather than unused positions. In environments where color-coding is critical—such as hospitals separating clinical and enterprise networks, or government facilities with different security zones—blank modules help maintain the visual logic of the system. A panel with half red jacks (secure) and half gray blanks is easier to audit than one with empty black holes that could be mistaken for failed ports. The material is also UV-stable, so surface-mount boxes in outdoor-accessible locations (loading docks, building entries) won't yellow or become brittle under indirect sunlight exposure.
This blank module is part of the broader Mini-Com™ ecosystem, which includes copper keystone jacks (Cat5e through Cat6A), fiber adapters (LC, SC, ST), A/V inserts (HDMI, USB, coax), and mounting hardware. The common footprint means a single panel design supports mixed-media installations: an AV rack might combine HDMI feedthroughs, XLR audio jacks, and blank positions reserved for future SDI or NDI modules as the production workflow evolves. The RoHS compliance ensures compatibility with municipal and federal procurement requirements that restrict lead, mercury, and other hazardous materials in installed building systems.
